Less than a year after winning the Best in Show at Brighton’s Pride Dog Show, Saltdean’s much-loved canine character, Baloo, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer.
His owner, Janet Kelly, has been told the traditional options for treatment are amputation of the affected leg and chemotherapy, although these are unlikely to extend his life to any great extent.
Baloo is a regular visitor to local cafes and The Telscombe Tavern – where he is known for enjoying his own sausage, or two, and socialising with everyone he comes across.
He is very much loved not just as a pet but also as a therapy dog. He was recently guest of honour at a SECAMB Ambulance staff day where he was petted by over 30 ambulance crew to help relieve stress – and was by far the most visited attraction. He has also been very popular with local people who like to ‘borrow’ him for walks, via the website ‘borrowmydoggy.com’
Although there seems to be little hope offered through traditional medicine, there is a controversial treatment available in the USA which has the potential to cure him. Even if the cure isn’t possible it could extend his life considerably – and there have been many case studies of dogs with similar conditions who have recovered against all odds.
But the cost is £1000 a month - so Janet has set up a JustGiving.com page to try and help with financing the treatment.
‘This is a very pricey amount but if it works then it should do so within 2-3 months. Not only that, Baloo’s experience could help other dogs that are diagnosed with this terrible disease in the future. UK vets are limited as to what they can offer but that doesn’t mean we always have to accept what is effectively a premature death sentence,’ she said.
‘He can’t walk far enough at the moment to get to either the Telscombe Tye or the beach on his own, so to be able to relieve his discomfort so he can enjoy those things again would be immense. He loves being part of Saltdean and everything he has to offer and if we can manage to get a good result for him then we can prove there is sometimes hope when you’re told otherwise.’ Anyone who would like to know more can contact Janet at janet@freefeatures.co.uk or through the Baloo Kelly facebook page.

I became passionate about pony rescue after taking on a neglected New Forest pony 24 years ago who I called Bella. What really touched my heart and was priceless was the transformation over a one year period - after some hard work and understanding Bella turned into a healthy & trusting pony. In 1995 I opened my own sanctuary for New Forest ponies and saved and re-homed over 57 from slaughter over a 5 year period. This was so rewarding and totally voluntary and I had to raise over £80,000 a year to keep it going. I took on Chelsea who was 6 months old, she was riddled with lice and worms and would attack any man who came near her, after plenty of patience and tender loving care we formed a truly awesome and special relationship, and I decided I would keep her myself! I had a lot of difficult ponies, young foals that I rescued who had been taken away from their homes too early. Wild mares, and many sick foals who needed calm and understanding and ongoing veterinary care. Body language played a very important part and I had over 30 volunteers helping on a rota, this is how I met my best friend Hannah. Chelsea is on permanent loan with friends in Norfolk and she actually got to compete at Burghley. I received an award from the Mayor of Eastbourne for my hard work within the community. I also published a book called Shelly finds her dream pony Chelsea, 4 years ago, an American book critic Sue said my book was too perfect, she has helped and encouraged me to re-write the book and to bring in rescue work this is now The Adventures of Bella & Emily. I have suffered with fibromyalgia for 5 years and arthritis in my neck so my days of helping horses and ponies hands on are sadly over. This is why I decided to help the 5 organisations I have chosen to benefit from 50% profit from the kindle sales and paperback sales of my book. I know thehard work, heart ache and commitment that goes on behind the scenes and without help they cannot continue to do the amazing work they do. My book is also an ideal gift. About my book Emily Pope is Thirteen years old and lives near the South Downs. Ever since she can remember she has dreamt of owning her own pony. The pony will be her best friend and they will share many adventures together. Emily's parents think she is too young for the responsibility of owning a pony and needs to gain more experience before they will consider it. So the adventure begins. Emily starts work at the nearby riding stables, works hard and learns everything she can. Will her parents relent when they see how single minded she is? Will Emily find her dream pony? This story will touch the heart of any youngster who loves ponies and take them on a delightful journey. There will be tears, laughter and joy along the way but will it be worth it in the end? Last week on the 2nd January I donated 100% of all of my profits, £1568.08 between my 5 chosen animal rescues from the royalties (kindle & paperback) and book signing sales from my self-published book, The adventures of Bella & Emily. Buy 'The Adventures of Bella & Emily' on Amazon here To those of you who have bought my book, you have made these donations possible, so a very big THANK YOU to you from the bottom of my heart. We strongly advise that you or your pets do not to touch it as it can produce a very nasty sting that could be potentially fatal! These creatures are not a jellyfish but a floating colony, they are very rarely seen on our shores but this year there have been more numerous reports of them being stranded on UK beaches. If you spot a portuguese man o'war then please contact the Marine Conservation Society on 01989 566017 or email them at enquiry@mcsuk.org. We have contacted them regarding this find. The message on social media mentions that the cat's tail was also missing. We understand from the correspondence that the police have been informed. As already stated these are unconfirmed reports. As soon as we know more or can verify the information we will update. If the story is sadly true then it does bring to mind comparisons with the 'M25 cat killer' reports that have been in the national media in recent years. Updates: Christine Robinson: South Norwood Animal Rescue and Liberty (SNARL) are aware of this reported incident. They are liaising with the Metropolitan Police on Op Takahe which is the investigation into what has become to be known as the M25 serial cat killer. They no doubt in a short time confirm if this latest victim is part of that inquiry. Please keep your cats indoors after dark and report anything suspicious to the police quoting Op Takahe. Thank you Lizzy Rinder: It has been confirmed that police and SNARL attended today and removed the body of a cat from Saltdean. They also attended a similar scene in Bristol. If you see anything like this please DO NOT remove it or touch it, but as mentioned above call 999* and mention Operation Takahe. You should also contact SNARL directly on 07961 030064 or 07957 830490. * We suggest calling 101 ZoneZine is your local online community magazine for our area (zones) covering Ovingdean, Woodingdean, Saltdean, Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs & Village, Peacehaven, Newhaven and near-by. The horses on the track off of the top of Coombe Rise in Saltdean have a large number of burrs in their manes and tails. We are no experts in this area but we are assuming that these may be causing the horses a little discomfort. Does anyone know if the owners of the horses or RSPCA been informed of this?
