Supporters of Baloo, the German Shepherd who lost his fight against canine cancer last month, are being praised by his owner who said they made the last few months of her pet's life 'considerably better than they might have been.'
People in Saltdean and the surrounding areas were incredibly generous in helping me raise the funds for his controversial treatment. Although he did pass quite quickly, he did so with minimal pain and knowing he was very much loved.
'His tumour grew on almost a daily basis and while other owners with pets diagnosed with similar conditions were claiming their dogs suffered great pain, Baloo was still enjoying short walks - and plenty of sausages.'
His controversial treatment, from the USA, is most likely the reason he was comfortable until the end, according to Baloo's owner, Janet Kelly.
'Unfortunately the tumour erupted and so it beat the treatment. However, we are tremendously grateful to the local support we have had in giving him the best chance.'
Baloo's feeding and water bowl, hand-made by Janet's husband, Graeme, is to be donated to the Crocodile Cafe in Longridge Avenue, Saltdean, where it will provide water - and maybe the occasional sausage - for other dogs in the area.
'Although I am immensely sad at losing my beloved Baloo, I am heartened by the fact he was so loved locally and had the best time living in Saltdean.'
