Brighton and Hove City Council will be voting on Thursday 25th of February for a budget amendment which would provide funding for, among others, the Saltdean Lido restoration project. Currently the Lottery Fund have released some of their grant to allow us to develop detailed plans for the remediation and restoration of Saltdean Lido, but construction work cannot start until all the required funding is in place. The last 12 months have seen all traditional grants diverted, understandably, to Covid relief but this has meant that while costs go up and the condition of the lido worsens our funding gap continues to increase, but so does the cost of ‘doing nothing’ and having to manage a deteriorating building. It is imperative that restoration begins before the building gets to a point where it is no longer viable. If this amendment can go through, which also targets the saving of other iconic City structures, the Saltdean Lido CIC will receive £1.65m which would give us sufficient funds, all to be spent locally, to ensure we can start the work later this year, and bring this 10 year target to fruition. We therefore urge all councillors to vote in favour of this amendment on Thursday to finally secure the future of the council owned Grade II* listed building, as well as Madeira Terraces, Volks railway and seafront railings and shelters and give the City a post-Covid boost. The City needs and thrives on tourism and the employment and taxpayers it generates to sustain an economy. Improving tourist and heritage attractions is key. Councillor Joe Miller, who is proposing the amendment, says "There is no reason why we cannot get moving on these projects immediately. They would provide a focus for the City post-Covid, restore civic pride and create jobs. All they require is the support of the Council at next Thursday’s Budget". If you support this amendment, which will help secure the future of Saltdean Lido and create jobs and support the economy, ahead of the vote on Thursday 25th February please let all the committee members below know. Thank you. Derek Leaver Saltdean Lido CIC BHCC Budget, Policy & amp; Resources Committee:
