With Hurricane Irma, which recently struck the Caribbean and USA , still fresh in our minds, images of catastrophic huge storms seem to be becoming more frequent and prominent in the news.

Arguably the most famous storm to hit the UK was o
n the night of the 15th to 16th of October in 1987.  The extratropical cyclone caused widespread damage  to the south east of England, buildings lost their roofs, trees were uprooted, power cuts swept through the area, some roads were impassable for days and sadly 22 people lost their lives in England and France as a result of the furious Force 10 storm.

Here are some notable facts the about the 'Great Storm of 1987':

Wind speeds of 115 mph were measured in Shoreham-by- Sea, then the  anemometer recording the gusts packed up!

It was estimated that 15 million trees were lost.

It was analysed as a 'one in a 200 year storm' for the south of Britain.

Famously poor old BBC weatherman Michael Fish in his lunch time tv forecast on the 15th had confidently declared,
"Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way . . . well, if you’re watching, don’t worry, there isn’t!"

So to the pictures! A big thank you to Guy Hetherington for allowing us to share his superb photographic documentation of Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Saltdean, Brighton and Hove in the aftermath of the '87 hurricane
