A brand new feature on ZoneZine!
Welcome to the start of our new selection of local history videos!
We've called them BN There Histories, BN being the postcode covering along the coast from Brighton to Newhaven, which is the area where we will be exploring, and we've used a slight play on words for 'being there' because we intend to film on location.
We will be telling the the often bizarre and intriguing stories related to places, buildings, events and people from the past (and present) of historical interest in and around the area's of Brighton, Woodingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs/Village, Peacehaven and Newhaven.
We kick off with ZoneZine's Darren Saltdean and local historian Douglas d'Enno on a 'talk & walk' up to visit the curious little monument called Harvey's Cross which is located on the South Downs just to the north of Saltdean and just to the east of Woodingdean in the parish of Rodmell.
In the film we will be telling you the unfortunate story of why it's there and the fascinating history of the area and people around it!
A special thank you to Ryan Ivatt and Orange Tree Media for the filming and editing. Also thank you to Yvette for the intro animation.
Subtitles can be switched off and on by selecting the cc button located on the footer of the Youtube video.
We do hope you enjoy!
If you wished to take a wander to the cross, below is a satellite image showing where Harvey's Cross is located, if you tap on the image it will take you to Google Maps for further detailed coordinates.
If you are inspired after reading this article to visit the cross, please consider sending us a picture of your good self standing next to it, you can email any images to firstname.lastname@example.org or post to either the Saltdean Zone, Woodingdean Zone or Rottingdean Zone, thank you.
PS. You may get a surprise if you do go there!
