Deep cliff erosion has created cave like areas in the seafront at Peacehaven.
With the news recently of a substantial cliff face fall at Seaford Head and the dramatic pictures of the large crack at Shooters Bottom (excuse the pun!), Beachy Head, cliff erosion is hot topic at the moment for our area.
In the these photos by Laura Coomber we can see large cavities at the bottom of the cliff face area beneath the Esplanade on the seafront at Telscombe Cliffs very near the border with Peacehaven where the chalk rock is being eaten away by the tide. In an area situated between the two sea defences of the Undercliff Walks at Peacehaven and Brighton (ending at Saltdean) this part of the cliff face is relatively unprotected from the relentless tide. In a post to Facebook page Brighton Skies, Catherine Senger from the Geography department at The University of Sussex said '' Just to let all of you know that Lewes Council have asked my department (Geography / Sussex Uni) to start monitoring this site.... We also monitor any cliff falls along the coast so if you witness any new developments (cracks, erosion etc) on your photographic sojourns please could you let me know and I'll pass on a message to our team. Thanks.''
