A satellite image showing just how dry our island has become in just two months without any significant (or any for that matter in some parts) rainfall and temperatures constantly hanging around nearly 30 degrees! With the Met Office not predicting any proper rainfall for possibly another two weeks we thought we'd share this 'eye in the sky' image courtesy of Sussex Weather UK showing the difference between a green looking May and the parched looking July of 2018. As the heatwave progresses with the chance of precipitation being from low to zero in the near future, some people have started to make comparisons to the sweltering summer of 1976 with mentions of the dreaded 'hosepipe ban' being muttered in conversation over drought weary flowers and yellowy brown lawns. Concerning the state of play with current water levels in our area Southern Water released this statement on social media: You may have heard on the news this morning (17/7/18) that some water companies are starting to introduce temporary use bans – what used to be known as hose pipe bans. At the moment, we’re not planning to introduce similar measures across our region, as we have good stocks of water resources in our reservoirs and - more importantly in the deep underground natural stores of water, called aquifers. But when warm weather hits, demand for water soars by as much as 70% compared to cooler weather and as the heat wave continues water supplies across the South East are in high demand. We’re currently supplying an extra 100 million litres of water a day across our region compared with an average day last year - that's nearly eleven million watering cans more water travelling our 13,700KM network from our treatment works to your taps. So we’re still asking you to ‘reduce your use’ by not washing cars and windows, not watering lawns and reducing water wastage wherever possible. Small changes like turning off taps when you’re brushing your teeth, having a 4-minute shower instead of a bath can make a big difference. We’re proud our customers are already some of the most water efficient in the country but you can see if could do even more by visiting our hints and tips page: https://bit.ly/20dCSfb __________________________________________________________________________________
