Lewes District Council and the Environment Agency have revealed plans to introduce a tidal surge flood barrier near the River Ouse Estuary in Newhaven which will span the rail track.
2019 should see the completion of the project, which aims to protect over 800 domestic and business properties. In 2013 nearly 60 houses  were flooded in that area when one such surge occurred.

The Newhaven flood alleviation scheme is set to cost around £18m. It will also protect roads and the railway station.
