Newhaven Coastguard: Tasked to Brighton Marina (Feb 25th 2019) at the request of Brighton Lifeboat Crew to visit a yacht that had been towed in by them for the 2nd time recently. The RNLI Crew were concerned at the lack of safety equipment and knowledge. The vessel with 4 persons on board had no lifejackets, had not done any seamanship courses no VHF radio course. The crew also had little knowledge of how to use the sails should the engine fail again. Strong safety advice was passed to the owner of the vessel. Should you fall into the water and become unconscious through cold water shock a life jacket will not only keep you afloat but it will keep you face up. A good quality self inflating lifejacket can be purchased for around £60, a small price to pay for something that will majorly increase your chances of staying alive. In a Coastal Emergency dial 999 and ask for Coastguard, or if you are at sea call on VHF channel 16 Feature image courtesy of RNLI
