A walk by the sea 30s stylie. This wonderful picture shows the vista from inside the Saltdean Tunnel looking out on to the newly constructed Undercliff Walk extension. The work on the new promenade was completed in July of 1935, we would guess this photo was taken very near to that time. Started on the 27th March 1933 the tunnel was prominently built by unemployed welsh miners, it was constructed at the same time as improvements were being made to the A259 which sits directly above. The tunnel is a little shy of 40 meters long, it is mainly built of brick but the end that faces out onto the seafront is built of concrete. The images below show that one end of the tunnel (Saltdean Lido end) is arch shaped, whilst the other is square, had you ever noticed that? 1930s postcard courtesy of G & W Kerr.
