Saltdean Lido - Brighton
Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company: We have entered a competition run by AVIVA that gives a chance to win £25,000 which we would spend on a permanent changing-room roof, and cubicles at the Saltdean Lido complex. The great news is - we’ve been shortlisted, but we can only win with your help!! All you need to do is vote for our community project via the Aviva link. It will only take a few minutes of your time, but if we win, it will mean that our changing room will have a fully insulated and permanent roof! This will reduce our carbon footprint, give us a much needed drainage system, and make the site usable for generations! It is free to vote. Please take time to register and vote for us, and you’ll be helping to secure a legacy. tell all your friends and family - together we can restore Saltdean Lido bit by bit! Cast your votes here THE DEADLINE IS ALMOST UPON US! During the golden age of the Lido movement, all sorts of interesting activities took place at the pool side, which included: beauty pageants, ‘Miss shapeliest ankle’ completions, and visits by ‘real’ mermaids! This summer we chose to reimagine the least controversial of these activities! DAY 4 OF THE 25K AVIVA COUNT DOWN! Not many people know that Saltdean Lido played a unique role in the Second World War, when it was requisitioned by the National Fire Service as a training facility in 1941! The Fire officers, who attended classes at the Lido’s sister building - the Ocean Hotel, would go onto fight fires all over the U.K in the Blitz (note how the Lido’s famous sign was removed at this time so as as not to serve as a signpost for Hitler’s Luftwaffe). 5 DAYS OF VOTING LEFT! Once funds have been raised to restore the Lido’s modernist building, heritage tours and an interactive learning zone will be created to celebrate the Lido’s colourful history! In the meantime, please vote for the 25k Aviva fund to help us with the changing room - if you don’t vote we can’t win it! Cast your votes here 6 DAYS OF VOTING LEFT! In the 1920s Charles Neville built Saltdean as a gentrified extension to Brighton’s Tourism Industry - Saltdean Lido was to be its centre piece, and the most modern Lido in the U.K. Please vote for the changing room fund so that we can then focus our attention on the main building! Taken this summer (2017) - the Photo is of a 1938 Austin 10 next to the lido, which was opened the same year.
A beautiful illustration by the Saltdean Estate Company, establishing the new resort’s place within the town.
7 DAYS LEFT TO VOTE! In the spirit of Facebook’s 7 day B&W photo challenge, we will be counting down days left to vote for the £25k with a different image (past and present) and a Saltdean Lido fact! Todays image was taken at the weekend when Chris Mansfield and a friend (down from London) hired Brighton Bikes to visit Saltdean and the Lido. Chris has happy childhood memories of spending long summer holidays at the pool whilst staying with grandparents during the 1960s!
