SALTDEAN LIDO, BRIGHTON- CROWD FUNDING APPEAL

20/7/2017

Crowdfunder: Saltdean Lido, is Grade II* listed and of national importance. After a 7 year campaign by volunteer local residents the Lido has been safeguarded from residential development, a 'community interest company' (CIC) set up, a successful bid to the Council to secure a 60-year lease and £3million raised to date. The Lido re-opened to the public on 17 June 2017 with over 4,000 attending the opening weekend.

Just this weekend, the Lido was full (see main photo) with families both local and visitors to the area enjoying the facilities. Sadly, after we closed on Sunday 9 July, a group of youths broke into the Lido (witnessed by local residents who alerted us and Sussex Police). 3 of the 8 youths were caught after they had left the Lido grounds and taken into custody that night and were again questioned on 10 July.

Sadly due to lack of evidence Sussex Police are unable to peruse this matter and prosecute the individuals. All we know, is that they are aged 15 and 16 and are local living in Saltdean and Peacehaven. As far, as we are concerned trespassing on private property is not permitted (not to mention dangerous where a swimming pool is concerned) and causing criminal damage is a criminal offence.

We opened as planned on Monday 10 July and despite being greatly saddened, we will not allow mindless vandals to ruin the pool and facilities for the majority.

We have been completely overwhelmed by the interest and public support following the media coverage of this awful behaviour by a few stupid individuals. Many companies have contacted us offering services and equipment and lots of people have asked how they can donate to help.

We are now reviewing the security issue, as the 6ft fencing and signs clearly did not work. We aim to install cameras and sufficient technology to act as a deterrent, as well as to providing evidence if in the future, anyone else thinks it's acceptable to break the law.

If you wish to donate to our project, it would be gratefully received. Of course, the wider question and social challenges remain over this dreadful behaviour.
