Enter an alternative universe
First find the archway by Saltdean Lido - this is the entrance to the tunnel which runs down through the chalk cliffs to the Undercliff Walk: an alternative universe of calm,  away from the hustle and bustle and traffic fumes of the City.

Stretching towards Rottingdean and Ovingdean and on to the Marina, the Undercliff walk is one of Brighton’ s best kept secrets.

Be prepared
Take food supplies, or money for an ice cream or drink at one of the cafes; a bucket, binoculars if you have them, sun cream - it can get very hot in the summer as the sun reflects off the white cliffs. In cooler weather take warm clothes to cover up and protect you from the sea breezes. Or dress as a smuggler. Welly boots or a spare pair of shoes and socks could be useful too.

  1. Sing in the Saltdean Tunnel - what does it sound like?
  2. Walk along the Undercliff - how many dogs, joggers, cyclists do you see? There maybe puddles or pebbles across your path - what does this tell you about the weather?
  3. Look for the sandy beaches at low tide - they are there, but where?
  4. Guess what’s round the next corner
  5. Look for baby crabs and seaweed in the rock pools - mind how you go - the rocks will be slippery
  6. Spot the remains of the Volks Railway track
  7. See the wildlife in the Ovingdean tunnel at the top of the cliff. How many steps are there from Ovingdean Cafe on the Undercliff Walk  up to the tunnel?
  8. Look for shells and interestingly shaped and coloured pebbles
  9. Spot the ships out at sea - wonder where they are going? To France? Make up a story and send it to ZoneZine
  10. See the skyscapes - what are the clouds like? See the different shapes. How fast are they moving? If you see the sun setting what are the colours like?
  11. Spot the birds on the cliff or swimming on the sea- how many different types are there?
  12. Listen - what can you hear - the waves, the birds - what other sound

What other things did you see on your walk?
What did you like best?
