Ovingdean-Rottingdean-Saltdean-Brighton The Deans Beach Clean Volunteers have regularly met up since 2012 on the first Sunday of every month to collect the rubbish found on our local beaches. Their hope is to influence our local & wider community to recycle, reduce and reuse. They educate and encourage all of their members to take part in beach cleaning whether it be on an individual or a bigger scale and to teach their members through Facebook or at their events how much litter is in our oceans and how it destroys the marine environment. Photo by The Light Whisperer The Deans Beach Clean Volunteers: With the amount of rubbish increasing by over 40% in the last 15 years, our local beaches were literally drowning in plastic food packaging, broken glass and fishing debris. Between 2014 -2015 there was a 34% increase in beach litter found. We were organising Surfers Against Sewage beach cleans and attending Marine Conservation Society beach cleans, but it just wasn't enough to make a real difference. Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) have a lovely worker who picks up the worst of the take-away and late night drinking mess every morning, but they can't keep up with the plastics that are building up in the shingle and sea defence rocks. It was time for more action, peaceful direct action, so we set dates for regular monthly beach cleans of Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean main beaches. We rotate between the 3 beaches, publicise the beach cleans wherever we can and educate participants and local groups and schools on marine wildlife and the damaging effects of marine & beach litter. Silent disco at the Saltdean beach clean in January 2018! Come and join us on the first fabulous beach clean of 2018 and for our very first silent disco event ever held by GRAB. We’ve been chatting to Amy at Pier2pier and with Vicky at BHCC and they have both been a real support. We will ask you to pay a refundable deposit before you borrow the headphones, since sadly on previous events a few sets were mislaid! So it will be a case of getting your equipment -pickers, bags and gloves, leaving a deposit and grabbing a set of head phones whilst you cruise around the beaches of Saltdean to some seriously good tunes. We will have our usual teach on the beach table and of course the GRAB team will be there to aid you in any way possible...we will definitely be joining in with all the dancing too! So come on down and join in this fabulous family fun event...everyone is welcome! To find out more - click-tap on the image below to go to their Facebook event page |
