The BENEFICIARY - The tax man, a movie, a Saltdean based author and a young man from Nigeria...10/4/2018 GET ON THE RED CARPET – COURTESY OF THE TAXMAN!
There are few people in the world who like paying tax and even if they do, they’d like to know their money is going into something worthwhile. But what if you were given the opportunity to exchange your tax bill for an investment in a British film being produced by Sussex residents? Tax advisers and wealth managers are usually aware of the schemes available to help High Net Worth individuals and Sophisticated Investors, but this information doesn’t usually enter the mainstream as it is targeted to such a small number of UK residents. However, those people who have anything from £10,000 readily available can benefit from tax efficient schemes which can significantly reduce or even negate their liabilities including income and capital gains taxes. Janet Kelly is the Saltdean-based author of Dear Beneficiary which has been optioned for film by Circadian Pictures – a small production company in Hassocks which has been fully approved for one of the Government Seed Enterprise Initiative Schemes (SEIS). Investors can place between £10k and £45k into the SEIS and would immediately qualify for at least 50% of that money back from the HMRC – more if the investor has any capital gains liabilities, going back up to three years. Investors are currently raising an initial £150,000 for Dear Beneficiary Film Ltd under this SEIS structure to finance the development of the film. This is the first stage which pays for the screenplay adaptation, a director and the leading actors. Depending on circumstances, up to 64% of any investment could be returned by the HMRC immediately and all the investment is placed back into the account, awaiting further profit flow and dividends. Already a number of A-list actors have been earmarked for different roles in the film which is a comedy about an older woman who has a relationship with a younger man from Nigeria. When he disappears and she gets a ‘Dear Beneficiary’ email promising her great wealth she believes it is from him. That is when her comedy adventure begins. Very much in the style of the Marigold Hotel films and with some similarities to Shirley Valentine and Thelma and Louise, Janet’s book has had 4 and 5 star reviews – and the film looks set to achieve the same level of response. ''Obviously anyone considering putting their money into any scheme needs to take full financial advice to ensure it is the best thing for them to do,'' said Janet. Investors placing more than £25k into the SEIS of Dear Beneficiary will also be invited to VIP events during the production process – including meeting the key actors, visits to the film sets and invitations to red carpet events. ''I think many of us would be happier putting money into a film than giving it to the HMRC'', added Janet.
